105 states sign on as co-sponsor to resolution signaling ground-breaking support

On 1st March 2023, the government of Vanuatu announced that 105 states have signed on to the draft resolution requesting an Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and Human Rights from the International Court of Justice, indicating overwhelming support for the Pacific-led initiative.

Widespread co-sponsorship sends a strong and unambiguous signal that nations are united in their commitment to abide by existing climate obligations under international law and to successful international climate cooperation.

The resolution comes after years of campaigning by civil society, led by Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change, and with a growing group of civil society organizations including World's Youth for Climate Justice, following closely in their footsteps.

The ground-breaking show of support, including many countries with strong WYCJ presence, is a major achievement in the youth-led journey to bring the world's biggest problem to the world's highest court.

On 20th February 2023, the core group of 18 ICJ Champion states under the leadership of the Republic of Vanuatu released the final draft resolution on requesting an ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and Human Rights.

The final draft resolution is available in English here.

Informal translations are available in French, Spanish and Portuguese.
