Bicycle lanes miraculously appeared on EDSA, Philippines

On May 24, 2020, The Philippine Star wrote, “Bicycle lanes miraculously appeared on EDSA last May 24, 2020. A product of the cooperation between citizen- cyclists and concerned government offices.” All of this is done in the great Filipino spirit of Bayanihan, a beautiful Filipino word made up of two words. Bayan - community and cooperation; and bayani – hero.

“For real transformation, change must begin within. Then, collective change will follow.” In the Philippines, we recently launched both our Road Sharing Exercises and Food Gardens Movement—projects for nation-building under the I am Climate Justice movement. Both seek to address issues heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to address the crippling problem on our inefficient (almost non-existent) transportation system, we introduced the concept of road sharing exercises. The whole idea is that we move people not vehicles. This is based on the principle that “those who have less in wheels must have more in roads.” For this purpose, priority will be given to public (collective) transportation systems and proper walkways and bike lanes.
