Collective Reflections from LCOY Nepal 2024 of WYCJ Members

By Shristi Gautam, National Front Coordinator, Nepal.

Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. I was reminded of the simple yet powerful words of Mead at Local Conference of Youths (LCOY) Nepal 2024- where I was inspired by youths who were so diverse yet could not be more united for the cause- the cause of climate justice and sustainability. LCOY Nepal 2024 brought together over 200 passionate young individuals from across Nepal. This event marked an important moment in the climate justice movement, showcasing the energy and innovation that youth can contribute to addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time. World’s Youth for Climate Justice financially contributed to organizing the LCOY Nepal, and eight members of WYCJ were part of LCOY in various roles. Here, I am sharing my experience of LCOY along with reflections of other members of WYCJ.

As the National Coordinator for World’s Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) - Nepal, it was a matter of immense pride for me to represent WYCJ on the stage at LCOY Nepal 2024, alongside representatives from UNICEF, FAO, SHE Changes Climate Nepal, and other esteemed organizations. It was inspiring to witness the collective strength of young people coming together to shape a better future. The diversity of participants, from young children to seasoned youth advocates, ethnicities, and regions, embodied the ethos of inclusivity that both WYCJ and LCOY strive to promote. The richness of this diversity was key to ensuring that marginalized communities were not only represented but had their voices amplified.

Before the event, Dulki Seethawaka, WYCJ Asia’s Deputy Front Convener, had also taken a virtual session that laid the groundwork for our discussions by highlighting the disproportionate effects of climate change on marginalized communities. This message resonated deeply with us, setting the tone for the entire event.

One of the highlights of LCOY Nepal 2024 was the Mock COP, a realistic simulation of global climate negotiations where participants took on the roles of delegates from different countries. This engaging activity allowed us to step into the complexities of international climate diplomacy, navigating the challenges of reaching global agreements. I recall how Medha Giri, found the Mock COP particularly enlightening. It gave her a deeper understanding of the intricate processes involved in shaping global climate policies.

The Mock COP was not just about learning; it was about empowerment. It allowed us to think critically about how Nepal, as a country, can navigate its climate commitments in the global arena. This experience underscored the vital importance of youth participation in such high-stakes negotiations, highlighting that our voices are essential for driving transformative change, both within Nepal and across the world. Another unforgettable aspect of the event was the discussion surrounding Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), where we explored how youth can contribute to the country’s climate goals. The importance of connecting local issues with global solutions was at the heart of many sessions, and this was particularly meaningful to participants like Aashish Bhatta, who shared his first experience with climate advocacy. Aashish echoed the emphasis of several activists about the critical need for youth involvement in the future of climate policy and action.

The beauty of LCOY Nepal 2024 was not just in the sessions and workshops but in the connections and stories that emerged. For instance, Sagar Subedi, who initially joined through virtual sessions while working at a district away from the capital city, (i.e., Kathmandu), expressed his excitement at being selected as a delegate for the physical event. He spoke passionately about how LCOY gave him the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and be part of a youth-led movement for climate change. Friendship, movement, passion, strategy, LCOY had it all. Similarly, Bikhyat Khatri reflected on the inclusivity of the event, noting how it bridged the gap between global climate policies and local realities. He stressed the need for more grassroots interactions in climate action, a sentiment shared by many attendees.

For many, LCOY was not just an educational platform but a space for personal and professional growth. Rachana Dangal, who volunteered at the event, reflected on how the experience allowed her to connect with inspiring individuals actively contributing to climate justice. Volunteering gave her a behind-the-scenes look at organizing large-scale events while also offering opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions during the sessions.

During one of the most impactful panel discussions, Prajwol Bickram Rana, WYCJ’s Membership Engagement Coordinator for the Asian Front, spoke on amplifying youth voices in the climate justice movement. He emphasized the need for diverse representation in climate activism, reminding us all that true climate justice requires voices from every corner of Nepal, including rural and indigenous communities. Prajwol’s insights were a call to action for all of us, urging young people to do their homework on climate issues before stepping into activism, ensuring that their advocacy is well-informed and impactful.

LCOY 2024’s success was largely due to the tireless efforts of the organizing team, led by Dikshya Subedi. As our Nepal Front member and Focal Point for the event, Dikshya’s leadership was instrumental in creating a space for meaningful change.

As the conference drew to a close, I could not help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and optimism. We had not only shared ideas and built connections but also created a roadmap for the future. The journey does not end here. The experiences and lessons from LCOY 2024 will guide us as we move forward, advocating for climate justice, equity, and sustainability. Together, we have proven that when youth unite, anything is possible. With leaders like Prajwol, Dikshya, Sagar, Medha, Rachana, Bikhyat, and Aashish by my side, I know that the future of climate action in Nepal is in capable hands.

LCOY Nepal 2024 was just the beginning of a broader movement, one that will continue to grow, inspire, and drive meaningful change for years to come. Together, we will shape a future defined by hope, action, and justice, ensuring that no one is left behind.
