Exploring Climate Justice through Art, Law and Activism

Our Transportable Pavilion Toolkit was launched on 21.09.2024

On 21.09.2024 our artivism workshop exhibited our final project for the first time in front of the Peace Palace! This unique project brought together a vibrant group of artists, activists and international lawyers to learn together in 5 workshop sessions about each other's disciplines and create together a project to exhibit in relation with the historic International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) Advisory Opinion (AO) on Climate Change. The group came up with a toolkit for an educational pavilion informing about the ICJ Climate Change AO.

Designed as a mobile educational space, the pavilion serves as a resource to inform communities about the ICJ AO on Climate Change and allows civil society to learn, engage in dialogue and get information.

Why a Pavilion Toolkit?

Climate change is a pressing issue that affects every corner of our world. Yet, conversations around international legal frameworks, such as the ICJ Climate Change AO, often remain inaccessible to the public. To bridge this gap, our group designed this easy-build-up pavilion from scaffolding that is transportable and brings crucial information and resources to diverse communities. This toolkit transforms any space into a temporary educational pavilion where people can learn, engage, and even take actionable steps toward climate advocacy.

Collaborating for Impact

Our exhibition celebrates the creative synergy between artists, activists, and lawyers. By merging these unique perspectives, we have crafted an interactive experience that goes beyond traditional activism. The toolkit includes:

  • The scaffolding and a plane building the pavilion in the shape of tribunal with the view on the Peace Palace. Which allows the public to climb the stairs and look at the Peace Palace.

  • A Peace Palace miniature in an aquarium where visitors can simulate how much the sea level would rise in the next 50 years.

  • Four big information posters informing about the impacts of Climate Change on young people in general, the ICJ Climate Change AO procedure and the artivism workshop.

  • Seed cards with some information about the Climate Change AO that can be handed out to visitors of the pavilions who can take them home “planting the seeds of climate justice”.

  • Price Tags raising awareness about the crucial role and responsibility of the individual as a consumer.

  • Three outside screens playing the witness stand videos developed by the Interactive Media Foundation where young individuals address the ICJ judges to deliver a progressive AO.

Building Awareness and Empowering Action

This was just the kick off for the pavilion. The idea is that it will travel to different locations aiming to reach individuals and communities who may not have access to these critical discussions. By making legal and environmental advocacy more inclusive and accessible, we hope to mobilize a broader movement for climate justice, informed and inspired by the ICJ Climate Change AO. Next time the pavilion is planned to be exhibited at the oral hearings starting in The Hague on 2nd December 2024.

Join us on this journey—visit our exhibition, explore the pavilion toolkit, and become part of this growing community committed to safeguarding our planet for future generations!
