The Youth Dialogue on Mountains, People, and Climate: Amplifying Voices for a Sustainable Future

-Sushmita Chhetri, Campaigner, Nepal Front at World’s Youth for Climate Justice

Nepal has been at the forefront of international discussions on the mountain agenda, particularly during COP 28 in Dubai in 2023. The country is now set to host an International Dialogue on Mountains, People, and Climate on May 22nd and 23rd, 2024 aiming to bring together national and international stakeholders to discuss climate change impacts on mountains, explore solutions, and strategize sustainable measures.

To amplify the voices of the youth in this dialogue, the Nepalese Youth for Climate Action on April 23rd, 2024, organized The Youth Dialogue on Mountains, People, and Climate: Amplifying Voices for a Sustainable Future, served as a platform for young leaders to voice their concerns and contribute ideas for sustainable solutions and to be in this program proved to be a productive experience for me.

This event highlighted the significant impacts of climate change, particularly in the youths of mountainous regions of Nepal. Issues such as glacier retreats, changing landscapes, and erratic weather patterns have posed serious threats to agriculture, water resources, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of both mountain and downstream communities. Engaging youth in these discussions is crucial as they are vital stakeholders in addressing these challenges.

The major areas of discussion in the event included the challenges faced by mountain regions' youth and potential solutions. Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Mr. Maheshwor Dhakal, emphasized the need to recognize climate change as both a threat and an opportunity, especially for private sectors. He highlighted the importance of understanding the entire water cycle from mountains to downstream areas and fostering collaborative efforts.

Buddhi Sagar Poudel, (Joint Secretary) Head of Climate Change Management Division of Ministry of Forest and Environment stressed the importance of youth involvement in policies, education, and awareness regarding climate change.

Dr. Popular Gentle, Advisor of Climate Change to the Hon. Prime Minister of Nepal, discussed the significance of youth participation in decision-making and the need for global advocacy for mountains' services, as climate change poses a severe threat.

Sushmita Chhetri as a National Campaigner of World's Youth for Climate Justice shared views as an emphasis on the need for collective efforts and solidarity between mountainous countries and communities. She added, the importance of involving a wide range of youth in climate dialogue and ensuring their active engagement in driving meaningful change. Sushmita also informed about the WYCJ campaign and how it has proved to be a successful youth-led campaign.

The session ended with a strong call for collaboration and unity among mountain countries and communities.
