Over 1,500 Civil Society Organisations Call On Countries to Support Vanuatu Climate Justice Campaign
A global alliance of civil society groups, representing over 1500 civil society organisations in 130 countries, has launched today to support a powerful new climate justice initiative by the Government of Vanuatu to take the human rights impacts of climate change to the world’s highest court, the International Court of Justice.

Just like pursuing the ICJ Advisory Opinion, the recognition of ecocide is about putting the international system to work to tackle some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century, and bringing justice to people and the planet who are falling victim to the large-scale degradation of our planet. WYCJ is therefore highly supportive of the widespread call for the recognition of ecocide.
WYCJ: ICJAO and the right to a healthy environment
World Youth for Climate Justice’s campaign on clarifying the obligations of states in protecting the rights of current and future generations from the adverse effects of climate change is closely linked with the right to a healthy environment, as we believe that recognising this human right would compel the states to adhere to more onerous obligations in mitigating the effects of climate change.

World’s Youth for Climate Justice is highly supportive of the calls for the establishment of a Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change. We view this Special Rapporteur as an important potential ally for civil society and youth organizations in bringing across their needs and voices to the Human Rights Council.
Youth call on UN leaders to take climate justice to Court

What was once a “turn” in climate litigation, has now become its central driving force. This series has documented some of the ground-breaking climate and human rights decisions in Courts across the globe. However, a key gap remains. The International Court of Justice – the world’s highest court – is yet to intervene on the real and imminent challenges of climate change.
